Luke Loranger is a middle-schooler in the small Midwestern city of Monroe, Michigan. It’s a quaint, picturesque town cut by the age-old waters of the River Raisin. It’s also home to the River Raisin National Battlefield Park, which marks the site of the War of 1812’s infamous River Raisin Battle and Massacre, a bloody clash where British troops and their Indian allies fought Americans along the river’s banks on a bitterly cold day in January 1813. The snow was stained with blood, and the early settlement of French Town was burned to the ground and abandoned.
